The Camp Braithwaite

In 1923 Mr Arthur Herbert Hope, the headmaster of The Roan School (now The John Roan School) in Grenwich purchased, with his own money, 40 acres of land in the village and built four huts. This was to provide boys from his school the opportunity of camping within the lakes and fells. In 1989 the original green and white wooden huts in the postcard were replaced with more modern, substantial buildings, funded by the The Roan Foundation, who took over the camp when Mr A.H. Hope died in 1930.
