It was interesting to find, upon researching this postcard, that it was one of over 1.2 million postcards sent to a boy in 1988, in order to help him achieve a Guiness World Record. Mario Morby was thirteen at the time, and suffering from pelvic cancer. He was being treated at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, who had asked him to take on the challenge, which another boy had started, in order to achieve the record, and to raise money for the hospital. Mario achieved the record, and appears in the 1989 Guiness Book of World Records, having received 1, 265 000 postcards from around the world. Mario kept just three of the postcards, auctioning as many of the others as he could, and raising £1700 by August 1988, which equated to approximately £4300 at the end of 2023.
