On the left of the picture is St Herberts school, built in 1842 with money donated from John Crosthwaite amd James Stanger, now Braithwaite CE Primary School part of the The Good Shepherd Trust. The building was enlarged and inproved in 1967 to have three classrooms. a hall, a kitchen, and indoor sanitation. The former school was Stanger Cottage and Stanger House was the headmaster’s residence. On the right of the picture is St Herbert’s Church (CoE), built in 1900 at a cost of £400 (including furnishings and equipment), replacing the former mission room on the site of the current church, built as a daughter church to St. Mary’s in Thornthwaite. St Herberts was named after Saint Herbert of Derwentwater an Anglo-Saxon priest and local hermit saint who lived on the largest island on Derwentwater (St Herberts) in the 7th century.
