About Braithwaite

Braithwaite, meaning ‘broad clearing’ (breither + thweit), formerly spelt Braithait c1160, Braytweyt c1276, Braythweyt c1285, Brathwate/Brathwat c1576-1760, and then Braithwaite c1774-Present, is located near Keswick in Cumbria, at the foot of Whinlatter Pass, with the mountains of Grisedale, Causey Pike, High Stile and Barrow forming the Coledale Horseshoe, as a backdrop. The village has a school built in 1842, now Braithwaite CE Primary School; a Memorial Hall built in 1927, now Braithwaite Institute; St Herbert’s Church (CoE), built in 1900, replacing the former mission room as a daughter church to St. Mary’s in Thornthwaite; and an Orthodox Church, purchased in 2007 by the Trustees of the Orthodox Parish of St Bega, St Mungo, and St Herbert, which was formerly the Methodist Chapel. There are three public houses in Braithwaite: the Royal Oak, the Coledale Inn and The Ruddings (Middle Ruddings). There are also four guest houses: Fern Howe Guest House, Howe View, Hermiston and Maple Bank. Braithwaite also has a village shop, which dates back to the 1830s.
